Privacy policy

This policy explains what AwwURL (run by AwwURL, "we") collects when you use awwurl.com, and what we do with it. The short version: you can use every tool without an account, we keep as little as the tools need, and we do not sell personal data.

What we collect and why

Searches and checks. When you check a website, link, QR code or email address, the thing you checked is stored so the result page exists and can be refreshed. It is not linked to you. The QR code image never leaves your browser; only the decoded text is checked.
Visitor reports. When you report a site as down or as a scam, we store the category, any text you wrote, your country and network name (derived from your IP address) and a one-way hash of your IP address and browser, which prevents duplicate reports and is not reversible. Your IP address itself is not stored with the report.
Your connection test. Status pages test whether the site loads from your browser. We store only whether it loaded and how long it took, so the page can tell other visitors whether a problem is widespread. Nothing that identifies you is kept.
Alerts. If you subscribe to alerts for a site, we store your email address and the site until you unsubscribe. Every alert email carries an unsubscribe link, and we confirm subscriptions by email before sending anything.
Contact form. Your name, email address and message are emailed to us and kept in our mailbox for as long as we need them to deal with your request.
Server logs and rate limits. Our hosting provider and Cloudflare keep standard access logs (IP address, page requested, time, browser) for security and to keep the site running. We keep short-lived counters per network to prevent abuse; these expire within an hour.

Cookies and advertising

The site itself sets no cookies for tracking. Advertising is served by third-party networks, which may set cookies or use similar technology to show ads based on your interests and to measure them. Where the law requires it you will be asked for consent before such cookies are set. You can opt out of personalised advertising through your browser settings or the network's own opt-out page. Analytics, where used, is configured to anonymise IP addresses.

Legal basis

For visitors in the UK and the EU: we process the data above on the basis of our legitimate interest in running the service, keeping it secure and preventing abuse, and, for alerts and advertising cookies, on the basis of your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.

How long we keep it

Check results are kept as part of the public record of a site's history. Visitor reports are kept for up to 24 months. Alert subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe. Contact messages are kept for up to 12 months after the last reply. Rate-limit counters expire within an hour.

Sharing

To produce a result we send the domain or link you checked to the public data sources listed on the About page (registries, the Internet Archive, blocklist providers, company registers). We do not send anything about you with it. We share personal data only with providers who process it on our behalf (hosting, Cloudflare, email delivery) and where the law requires.

Your rights

You can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, object to processing, and complain to your data protection authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office). Write to [email protected]. We answer within one month.

Children

The site is not aimed at children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes

We will update this page when our practices change and show the date of the last change at the top.
